ADVISORY INFORMATION FOR BOOKING

Many of these large listing websites are used by managers to generate leads and interest for their owners properties. Recently however the more traditional ones such as VRBO and Homeaway have decided to change from an advertising platform to what is called a “transactional” model, where they charge the manager a commission for each booking, the guest an additional service fee and they now wish to manage the financial transactions and develop more controls over our business and your booking opportunity.  This has been common in the hotel trade for years and is now under scrutiny by the European Commission with various advisory and potentially law making decisions with full disclosure on hidden charges.

Some websites will hide your contact details and inist that all correspondence is via their own email relay system and hide your’s and our phone numbers. Essentially this is to avoid direct business and to ensure that can take higher margins, upsell and re-market actively to you. These sites all wish to increase income via taking money from the booking process.

ON MANY OCCASIONS YOU ARE SIMPLY PAYING TOO MUCH. THIS IS GROWING GLOBAL ISSUE.

We pay a commission on each booking made to the websites in this situation. This trend is powered by the ability of large well funded marketplaces which can dominate search engines such as Google and the best deal you can get is left on the table.  Unlike Amazon where the product is mass produced and can be heavily discounted for volume, a holiday rental is unique and is only available once. The same methods employed by Amazon to take margin from mass sales of products at very low prices does not apply.

99% of the time the best price is found by booking direct with the manager and this means a simple call or email to the business. However the sites often change the property name and make it more difficult to find the best deal.  The link below is an example that is shown on a number of websites with the cottage name disguised to avoid guests finding it directly. if you click the link you will see it actually has a name!

Be aware however, even this is fraught with problems however as the listing sites distribute the information to hundreds of smaller sites who take a small slice of each online booking.
